I'm sorry its so big, I just had so much I wanted to say. And at the end of the day, you can choose what you read. It is basically just a overview of everything so you can read as little or as much as you want.

I have used my latest digital painting Rapunzel to demonstrate painting the facial features and background.
Additionally I have added a realistic imaginative example of painting features.

If you have any questions, pleaaasse comment, some of my wording may be a little vague or chatty, so I'm happy to clarify, or try to answer other questions.

Thanks so much, hope it helps.

This is SO useful...thanks so much for making this!!!!  I just downloaded GIMP recently, had no idea how to actually paint nice pictures without manipulating a photo, until I saw this...it all makes sense now!  And your artwork is excellent too, just like the Disney movies yet with an added artistic style, I can see why this got a DD!  Thanks again! :happybounce:

Reading comments like that is thanks enough!
I was the same, I use to work with the softest lightest colours, but I was always so amazed by alicexz 's use of colour and it really inspired me just to go crazy. Another good way to use colour is to try out the Ink tool. It forces you to work with really strong colour. Check out some of my latest deviations, they were made with the ink tool. :)
And of course! I need practice too! Just go for it! <3

Yea well, you gave me (and not only me) a lot of precious clues so I'm using them ^^ It was you who encouraged me to use different colors when shading, not only black and white with "soft light" mode. And now I'm asking myself, why I couldn't come up with it by myself :D I'm using your tips about eyes, teeth (still need A LOT of practice), mouth... You helped me a lot and I don't know how to thank you properly ^^;

I was in the same boat, trust me, you just have to jump and and refrain yourself from comparing yourself to people you consider "better" than you, because you're capable of anything you dream, you just have to take every step that everyone else had to take too. <3

Hi there!

Sure can!

It really depends on what type of drawing Im doing, I can do quick sketches within an hour. On average I might spend 8-10 hours on a big painting. And even more if it's really involved.
I also don't work with layers often, I just paint straight on, more true to the form of painting. If I do though I might have 4 or 5 layers. :)
And sometimes I name them, but most of the time I don't. However, I would highly recommend it. :)

Cheers my friend!
